Greetings!
On behalf of everyone at the Raptor Research Foundation and Talamanca Hawkwatch, we extend a warm greeting and invite you to join us at the 2025 annual international conference in San José, Costa Rica. We are thrilled to host this conference in a magical paradise where millions of birds navigate their way south every fall passing through, or staying, in Costa Rica.
Both ancient and cutting-edge, equal parts vibrant and tranquil, Costa Rica is a lush paradise in Central America, renowned for its incredible biodiversity and conservation efforts. Recognized as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, Costa Rica is home to over 900 bird species, including more than 50 species of raptors. Its natural beauty and ecological significance are reflected in its rainforests, mountains, and wildlife sanctuaries. With a warm climate year-round and endless opportunities for birding and outdoor exploration, Costa Rica offers something truly extraordinary for researchers, bird enthusiasts, and conservationists alike.
As a global leader in conservation and ecotourism, Costa Rica has set aside over 25% of its land as protected areas, making it a haven for wildlife and a dream destination for those passionate about nature. Among its 32 national parks and five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, visitors can explore habitats that support some of the planet's most fascinating birds of prey, such as Harpy Eagles, Ornate Hawk-Eagles, and Swallow-tailed Kites.
A highlight for raptor enthusiasts is the Talamanca Hawkwatch, one of the most important migration sites in the Americas. Each year, millions of raptors—including Broad-winged Hawks, Swainson’s Hawks, and Turkey Vultures—pass through this critical bottleneck in Costa Rica's highlands. This project not only monitors these awe-inspiring migrations but also contributes to education, research, and conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of protecting raptors and their habitats.
San José, the capital city and our conference location, offers easy access to a variety of restaurants, markets, and cultural landmarks. Sample Costa Rican cuisine with dishes like gallo pinto, casados, and fresh tropical fruits, or explore museums and theaters that reflect the country’s rich history and vibrant culture.
For first-time visitors, we’re excited to welcome you to this extraordinary country and help you discover the wonders of its birdlife. For returning guests, our off-site events and field trips will provide new opportunities to experience Costa Rica’s spectacular avian diversity. Join us for guided birding trips, visits to key conservation sites, and the chance to observe raptors in action at premier locations like the Talamanca Hawkwatch. Shuttle service will be provided for all registered excursions—don’t miss the chance to deepen your connection with Costa Rica’s incredible natural heritage.
We look forward to seeing you this fall!
