Arrival
Money Changing: Costa Rica currency name is colones, the official exchange rate is ₡505 to US$1, the best place to exchange money is at a local bank. If you arrive early there is a bank office at the departures section on the second floor of the SJO International Airport that opens at 7:30am until 5:00pm. Also, there are ATMs at the terminal and near each hotel. The recommendation is to have US $100 available per week in colones to use at markets and gift shops. Elsewhere, credit cards are usually accepted at locations such as restaurants, coffee shops, mini markets and more. Skip trying to exchange money at the airport after leaving customs due the unfavorable exchange rates.
Sim cards: There are three major companies providing sim cards (Kolbim, Claro and Movistar) and their plans start at US$15. You will have 1.2GB and unlimited social media including: WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Waze etc. Claro works in all central american countries if you are considering traveling after or before the conference.
Navigation or GPS: Waze and google maps work well in Costa Rica main roads, please always double check the name of your destination since some names of places are duplicated and can be located far away from each other. For instance: Playa Hermosa Guanacaste, Playa Hermosa Puntarenas or Playa Hermosa de Dominical.
